What inspired you to start Sweetie Bakes?
Buddy Valastro from Carlo’s Bakery. His TV Show called Cake Boss has inspired me to get into Baking and create my own amazing cakes for client in around Johannesburg.
What was the greatest challenge you faced while starting to be on your own?
The challenge I have faced is trying to build a client base from scratch. Most orders are from word of mouth and it takes a while for people to place their trust in you. Once an order comes in you have to prepare close to the day of delivery so that my product is always fresh and requires some long hours to plan, get the fresh ingredients, bake and decorate and deliver or sell at Market days.
What does being a baking business owner mean to you as a young adult?
Honestly, baking runs through my family my Grandpa was a baker himself and he also had his own ice cream store in Sandton – Dairy Delight, where he made his own ice cream and customized ice cream cakes.My Yiayia (granny) was a home baker and she taught me how to bake great Greek desserts which I loved and it gave me the courage to start Sweetie bakes. I love baking it means so much to me and my dream is to become a great baker. My goal is to grow my company by opening my own cake & dessert bar in the future.
We have all had a baking fail, can you describe your worst baking disaster?
The one mistake I have had with baking is sometimes skipping steps because I am in hurry and the cupcakes have flopped. I have learnt to slow down .
What are a few unique cake recipes you have baked?
I have made: Themed cupcakes – Spiderman, Barney, Musical Notes, and Valentine’s Day etc. Greek pastries (Galaktoboureko – custard tart, Baklava, Melomakarona – Honey and almond cookies, etc.),DJ board Cake,21st Birthday Cakes, Sweet Potato and Cinnamon pudding, Lemon tartlets, Crumb apple and cinnamon pudding, etc.
How do you make sure that you give the best service to your clients? I listen to me clients’ wishes and deliver to their needs, to make sure I havewasa satisfied client. What advice can you give to someone who’d love to advance in this field?
Never give up always push yourself. What do you enjoy best running this business? I enjoy decorating the cakes for my clients
What are your biggest highlights with Sweetie Bakes?
Rainbow Sprinkle cake was my biggest highlight of this month. I happy with this cake everyone loved the cake and my client’s friends would not stop talking about it.
