LOGISTICS COMPANY UNITRANS last month launched its newly upgraded Centre of Excellence (COE). “The launch of our upgraded COE marks a significant milestone for Unitrans and the industry as a whole” said Unitrans solutions executive Jacques Greeff (pictured). He added that the company was thrilled to unveil this “state-of-the-art facility that will drive value creation and operational excellence” for clients across Africa. Some of the tangible benefits of the COE include fleet optimisation, reduced standing times and an overall boost in vehicle efficiency
BARLOWORLD EQUIPMENT LAST month handed over the latest project in its ongoing community social investment programme across Mpumalanga: several mobile classrooms and educational facilities for the Kwazamokuhle Secondary School in Hendrina. The initiative is a partnership between Barloworld Equipment, the Thungela Resources Goedehoop Colliery, and the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality. The scope of the project includes sourcing and delivery of fit-for-purpose mobile classrooms to be used as a staffroom, kitchen and a boardroom, as well as all relevant furniture and carpentry fittings. RESEARCH PROJECTS BY local young scientists competed against other high-tech studies at this year’s Beijing Youth Science Creation Competition in China. The four young scientists, won their place to represent South Africa at the competition, having been nominated by a panel of academics and professionals at the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists International Science Fair (ISF) last year. Nyakallo Nonjabulo Mbongo (pictured), a Grade 11 Welkom-Gimnasium learner and Eskom Expo ISF Gold medal recipient showcased her research project, “Soil restoration, Inoculated biochar?” Mbongo was moved by how soil degradation threatens food security. The significance of her findings is that small-scale farmers and gardeners can improve the quality of their crop yield by using a cost-effective and readily available inoculated biochar
