Pre-menopause, menstrual cycles can be erratic, but if you’re younger, they should be fairly regular. ‘ If your cycle varies by more than four days a month, it can be a sign of a problem such as polycystic ovary syndrome,’ says endocrinologist Helen Mason.

If normal painkillers don’t help ease the pain or you find your bleeding is too heavy for standard protection. This could indicate the presence of fibroids or endometriosis, for example, which can be treated.
