Reading books can be most rewarding

- Tamlyn Jolly

CALLING all Grade 1 to 5 junior primary learners.

Whether you want to improve your reading skills, or you just enjoy reading, the Read 2 Lead initiative is starting next week and will once again run all year.

Owing to the success of last year's campaign, this year's initiative is open to Grade 4 and 5 learners as well.

Stories will be published for Grade 1 – 3 learners, with a separate story for Grades 4 and 5 one week apart.

The aim is to motivate young learners to read with comprehension, and this forms part of the national Read 2 Lead campaign, initiated in 2015 by the Department of Basic Education.

With exciting prizes on offer from Tronox, the initiative's main sponsor, as well as monthly vouchers from Bargain Books, this is something no primary school child would want to pass up.

The idea behind Read 2 Lead is to get children to read for 30 minutes each day, and the comprehension test ensures they understand what they have read.

This is important for vocabulary development.

In the coming months, there will also be story writing competitions, also with exciting prizes sponsored by Tronox, so be sure to keep an eye open for those.

Check out for next week's Eyethu Bay Watch and the first of this year's Read 2 Lead fun story.

Many exciting prizes could be yours, but remember, you have to be in it to win it.
