THE Inkanyezi Regional Court convicted and sentenced a 26-year-old man to 20 years imprisonment for raping a relative.

The case arose from an incident in February, 2013 when a 31-year-old woman was on her way to visit a friend in the KwaNyembe area.

She was followed by the accused, who grabbed her while she was walking through a forest and then raped her.

A friend who was expecting a visit from her, repeatedly phoned her, but she did not answer.

A search was conducted and she was found the following day, injured and unconscious.

A case of rape was opened at Mbongolwane police station and was assigned to the eShowe Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit for investigation.

The accused fled the area, but was arrested in Umgababa last year.

He remained in custody until his sentencing on Friday.
