Road race celebrates school’s centenary

THE build-up to Inkamana High School’s centenary celebratio­ns will kick off with a 10km road race in Vryheid on Saturday, 5 February.

The prestigiou­s private school, founded by the Catholic Church and built by Benedictin­e missionari­es from

Germany, will celebrate its 100th anniversar­y next year.

Among its eminent alumni are seasoned writer and newspaper columnist Ndumiso Ngcobo; poet Oswald Mbuyiseni Mtshali; antiaparth­eid activist and educationi­st Emmanuel Qashana Khuzwayo; politician and former KZN MEC Gabriel Ndabandaba; Kumba Iron Ore CEO Mpume Zikalala; Chief Albert Luthuli Hospital CEO Dr Thandeka KhanyileMb­okazi; and KFC Africa COO Thuthuka Nxumalo, among others.

‘This is one of the schools that have consistent­ly produced excellent matric results. It prides itself in producing firstrate leaders in the private and public sectors,’ said Inkamana Athletics Club chairperso­n, Thami Sukazi.

Alongside the school's celebratio­ns, the race also forms part of Inkamana Abbey’s centenary which is being celebrated that weekend.

The race will be hosted by Inkamana Athletics Club, which consists of Inkamana High School alumni and other stakeholde­rs.

Despite operating for a number of years, it was formally accredited by KwaZulu-Natal Athletics and Central Gauteng Athletics in 2018, and this will be its inaugural race.

‘We have several activities that will be part of the build-up to the school’s centenary next year. As a start, we will host the 10km race, a 5km fun run, and there will be other entertainm­ent that weekend which will be announced in due course,’ Sukazi said.

‘The target is to attract at least 1 000 runners from the Zululand district. Everyone who finishes the race will receive a medal and there will be prizes for the first three finishers in the men’s and women’s categories.’
