Salga condemns ongoing killing of women in KZN

- Mbuso Kunene

AFTER learning of several recent brutal killings of women in the province, uMlalazi Mayor Queen Xulu has come out guns blazing, accusing provincial police of failing to protect women.

Xulu, who is also the provincial SA Local Government Association (Salga) Women's Commission chairperson, said the motives behind these 'inhumane and senseless killings' are still unknown.

Her outrage follows the gruesome killing of an 84-year-old woman in Folweni, south of Durban, and the discovery of the body of a middleaged woman in bushes in uMlalazi.

The body was found just days after the woman was reported missing.

The Folweni woman's family reportedly found her in bed, lying in a pool of blood after a shooting the previous night. They did not suspect the gunshots to have emanated from inside the house.

Last week, a Nongoma senior citizen who lived by herself was raped for almost the whole night by an intruder.

“As much as this news is shocking, one should not be surprised as the statistics show that KZN has become the epientre of crime, with 17 people murdered and 25 raped daily,” said Xulu.

“When one looks at the province's crime statistics, they show lawlessness has become the norm,” she added.

Xulu further said this was the result of the government’s failure to enforce the rule of law and keep people safe.

“Our heartfelt condolences go out to the bereaved families. As the leadership of Salga in the province, we condemn these inhumane and senseless killings, and call upon the minister of police to ensure justice is served," said Xulu.
