Youth multipurpose centre revived

- Gaddafi Zulu

THE multipurpose centre in Khula Village near St Lucia was cleaned up last week and is being revived for community use after ongoing vandalism left it in a bad state.

Ward 3 councillor Ntokozo Mlungwana said the centre, which is located in Dukuduku, had been cleaned up for the local community.

“With unemployment levels so high, we were getting a number of requests from unemployed youth who want to make use of the centre,” said Mlungwana.

Since the clean-up, people have already started using the centre for studies; to sew goods; as well as a section reserved for a boxing gym.

“Boxing in our area has a great future and has helped many go on to various careers, while some are making a name for themselves in the sport,” he said. There is also a skills development programme at the centre, catering to young people.

Security guards have been stationed at the centre and it has been agreed that the community work programme (CWP) would regularly maintain the centre’s yard.

People using the centre will also clean their respective areas.

A new water tank to replace the stolen one will be installed, and the borehole at the centre would be revived, he added. The councillor thanked the ward committee and war room members who assisted in reviving the centre.

“The people using the space do not pay rent, but are using it for self-development, which will ultimately benefit the community,” said Mlungwana.

The Department of Correctional Services, CWP members, and the Extended Public Works Programme were also part of the clean-up.
