Borehole handed over to community
THE community of the maKhoweni section of Khula Village in Mtubatuba was overjoyed last weekend when the ward councillor handed over a new borehole to ease prolonged water woes.
Councillor Ntokozo Mlungwana said the borehole was a result of work with uMkhanyakude District Municipality, mandated to supply this resource.
The councillor said this was done while an ongoing district municipal project in the ward ensured damaged water infrastructure was repaired.
An assessment is being conducted to determine which areas do not have a sustainable supply.
Mlungwana said the borehole is an alternative water source for residents whose supply would sometimes be affected due to unforeseen faults.
“We are installing this borehole because we do not want to see our people going to a stream to fetch water to wash their laundry, or for household use,” said the councillor.
He added that the affected residents would at times pay their fellow residents who have their boreholes in their yards.
“Now imagine the times we are in; 30 years into democracy. We cannot have people who have to pay R1 or R2 just to get water, so we started a programme that although the residents get water in that area for certain times of the day or certain days, there is a need for an alternative supply,” said Mlungwana.
He said the district municipality assisted with a water truck to fill a communal tank, but a borehole solved this problem.
Businessman Manosha Ndlovu, who drills boreholes, and electrician Samuel Gumede and the local branch of the ANC put their heads together to provide this solution, said Mlungwana.
He said Ndlovu drilled the borehole, while Samuel electrified it and others donated money.
He assured that his office is in communication with relevant stakeholders to ensure Dark City, kwaSheleni, Bundu Basher and other areas also have a supply of water.
