THREE OF OUR FAVOURITE VEGAN WHITES:

-

Delheim Sauvignon Blanc 2018: Fresh and zesty with a tang of tropical fruits (R79) Org de Rac Die Waghuis Verdelho 2016: Crisp, rounded and smooth (R199) Waverley Hills Sauvignon Blanc/Sémillon 2018: Grassy and tangy, with a hint of herbs (R85) There are two main reasons why a wine might not be vegan. Firstly, if the harvesting process is mechanical, small animals (like chameleons) and insects may be picked and processed along with the grapes. Secondly, many wines have been put through a filtering process – where the cloudiness is removed by straining the wine through a ‘fining agent’. These fining agents are sometimes not vegan: egg albumin, fish bladder or gelatine, for instance. A vegan wine would either not have been through the fining process (allowing the cloudiness to settle on its own) or another agent, like clay, limestone or plant casein, would have been used instead.
