✭✭✭✭ MAGIC SHAPEWEAR TUMMY & WAISTSLIMMING TANK (502565766) ABOUT R260; WOOLWORTHS

This garment is breathable and not too restrictive. It controls the tummy and hip areas and creates a svelte look if you’re wearing a tight-fitting top. The wide straps are comfortable and don’t dig in, but testers would have preferred adjustable straps. Also, the wide width of the straps is noticeable under clothing. The shaper doesn’t creep up, but some testers struggled to get it on.

Verdict: Great smoothing – the garment moulds well to the contours of your body.

✭✭✭ SHAPEWEAR (110267) ABOUT R120; ACKERMANS

A comfy camisole that offers a fair amount of support, pulling in the tummy and smoothing bulges without making you feel hemmed in. The hold isn’t as strong and may not offer enough support for amply endowed women, For slighter built women, the firm fabric tends to flatten the breasts rather than lift them. The straps are comfortable, but the fabric is fairly thick and can get hot.

Verdict: Compression is gentle but good; the shaper isn’t unbearable to wear over long periods.

✭✭✭ SHELLEY ROUND-NECK VEST SHAPER (56300611) ABOUT R99,95; EDGARS

This shaper provided moderate control around the tummy area for most testers. The fit is snug mid-waist and banishes bulges, but there’s little support around the bust – no lifting or cleavage enhancement. The fabric is stretchy and the garment comfortable to wear for the day. The straps are comfortable, and the garment stays in place, with no rolling up.

Verdict: Comfortable to wear for long periods and provides good support around the waistline. A good budget buy.
