Need to know
• Book for a group of 12: it’s a lovely thing to do with a group of friends. • Each hut sleeps 12 and provides warm water, mattresses, firewood, candles and solar-powered lights, but you’ll need to bring your own bedding. • We were there in the first week of July and I loved the wildness of the weather, but obviously high summer would be magnificent too. • It’s a slackpacking hike, so your box of goodies (clothes, bedding, food, wine) is transported to the next cottage for you. • All you need to carry is a daypack. Be warned: they will not take extra stuff; everything has to fit into your box. • The hike may be cancelled at the last minute or you may be pulled off it once you’ve already started because the Denel Overberg Test Range occasionally uses a section of the De Hoop Nature Reserve for missile testing. This is not a joke! I know people it’s happened to.
