JOSEPH JOSEPH HELIX GARLIC PRESS

ABOUT R309; YUPPIECHEF.COM This innovatively designed utensil uses a twisting action rather than a squeezing motion. You don’t have to apply downward pressure because the twisting mechanism requires much less force than other presses. So going through stubborn bulbs is a breeze. Performance was outstanding and efficient – the large chamber can crush several cloves of garlic at once – and it was brilliant at mincing ginger too, producing a fine texture. Residue was easy to remove and the parts can be separated for convenient cleaning. Verdict: A highly efficient, affordable utensil that is excellent value for money.

JAMIE OLIVER

GARLIC PRESS/CUTTER ABOUT R659; YUPPIECHEF.COM This trendy-looking press takes the hassle out of crushing garlic and ginger. The flat handles fit nicely in the palm of your hand, making it easy to operate, though it requires a bit of force to press down. The distinguishing feature of this press is its two large chambers, which give you the option of slicing or crushing garlic simultaneously. The press chamber easily removes the garlic skin. It’s on the heavy side, but is sturdy and dishwasher safe.

Verdict: A great multipurpose press that produces good results but comes with a high price tag.

OXO GOOD GRIPS

ABOUT R319; YUPPIECHEF. COM This model performed brilliantly and didn’t compromise on comfort – the handles are rubberised and non-slip for a sturdy grip and are capable of absorbing pressure, which made a difference when squeezing stubborn bulbs. The large chamber can hold multiple cloves and is strong enough to crush unpeeled garlic or peeled ginger into a good texture. The built-in cleaner isn’t as convenient as removable ones and the press itself is a tad weightier than some others.

Verdict: This peeler was the most comfortable to use and produced great results too. Worth the price.

KITCHEN INSPIRE BY ANZO R119; PNP We liked this press: it’s lightweight, relatively comfortable and straightforward to use. It crushed various sized cloves with ease – though you can’t fit too many in at once – and was good at crushing ginger too. While it was slightly harder to press, the gadget did the job. The rounded handles aren’t too hard on the palms but they are on the short side and a bit too chunky to get a good grip. The small chamber can be removed for cleaning.

Verdict: A good all-rounder and excellent budget buy!
