10 GREAT WHITES
VAN LOVEREN PERLÉ DE JEAN PINOT GRIGIO 2018, R75: SA’s first Perlé-style (slightly sparkling) Pinot Grigio – refreshing and light, it’s perfect for a spring brunch. – Charis
BABYLONSTOREN CHENIN BLANC 2019, R98: This light dry Chenin Blanc is relatively easy on the wallet and makes for the perfect treat after a stressful day at work. You can taste fruity undertones of pineapple, guava, figs and Packham pear. Sunshine in a bottle! – Christina
BOSMAN FAMILY VINEYARDS GENERATION 8 CHENIN BLANC 2018, R75: I really liked the almost creamy texture of this wine. It’s crisp and easy-drinking with notes of ripe pear and peaches. A real treat at a great price. – Charis
BACKSBERG CHENIN BLANC 2019, R50 is a refreshing, easy-drinking wine with a lovely lingering aftertaste. I could taste a bit of melon and a hint of pineapple. A nicely balanced wine, with just the right amount of acidity. – Andile
FLAGSTONE WORD OF MOUTH VIOGNIER 2018, R90. Viognier is one of my favourite varietals. Chardonnays are way too heavy for me, but I’ve always loved that rich golden glow, and a Viognier has all of that without the heaviness of a Chardonnay. Word of Mouth is perfect with a bowl of steamed mussels in a rich creamy sauce. The fruitiness cuts through the richness of the cream without spoiling the seafood flavours. – Caryn BALANCE
CLASSIC SAUVIGNON BLANC 2019, R47: Crisp and zesty with a bit of ripe peach and pineapple. Very light in colour and taste, so it would pair well with a subtle dish. – Sarah
JOURNEY’S END HAYSTACK CHARDONNAY 2018, R85:
I generally prefer wooded Chardonnays so buttery you could spread them on toast, so I wasn’t expecting much, because this wine is only lightly oaked. I was pleasantly surprised: it’s light and fruity (with notes of melon and citrus peel), but with a nice balance of biscuity warmth. Another plus is that the farm uses eco-conscious practices, so it’s an environmentally friendly buy. – Liesl
AVONTUUR SAUVIGNON BLANC 2019, R100: Flinty and crisp, this wine tastes of warm tropical fruits with a brisk limey zest added in for good measure. Strong enough to hold its own with some quite strongly flavoured foods; we had it with tuna steak and it was delicious. – Suzy
FAT BASTARD CHARDONNAY 2018, R95 really punches above its price tag: a bit of vanilla, a hint of oak and deliciously ripe peach nectarine come through. A winner! – Crystal
KLEINE ZALZE CHENIN BLANC 2019, R69 This fresh, crisp wine has a lovely delicate fruity tone, which makes it easy to drink. It pairs beautifully with fish or chicken. – Liezel
