THE MOVIE OF THE YEAR

-

‘I wish my answer was something more sophisticated than the latest comic book blockbuster, but I couldn’t choose anything other than Avengers: Endgame. After 10 years of (mostly) perfectly coordinated movies, it came to an action-packed and emotional end. Was I happy with how they wrapped up some storylines? No. Did it at least have a happy ending? Also no. Was it a fitting farewell for the heroes we’ve come to know? Definitely.’ Stephanie B, 5FM radio presenter

‘I’m a sucker for a superhero film. I’m also a sucker for a film that flips off The Man – literally. So, it’s a no-brainer that Captain Marvel gets my thumbs up for 2019. With Brie Larson in the title role, it caused ructions in the sexist set –

always a good sign. The film not only shows off the supreme powers of Marvel’s most indomitable superhero, it also celebrates female friendship when Danvers is reunited with her pilot bestie, played by Lashana Lynch.’ Gayle Edmunds, strategic projects editor at Media24 and film critic for 702 and Cape Talk

‘What if you were a struggling musician – and suddenly the only person on Earth who remembers the Beatles? You’d pass their songs off as your own, of course! Yesterday was such fun: Himesh Patel (Jack) has a great voice, Kate McKinnon makes for a fabulous conniving agent, Lily James an unassuming love interest and Ed Sheeran… well, he persuades Jack to rename “Hey Jude”, “Hey Dude”. Now if only Jack can recall the lyrics to “Eleanor Rigby”… Liesl Robertson, features editor, FAIRLADY
