We test jug blenders TEST HOUSE
A blender is a useful addition to any kitchen. We tried out a few to find the perfect sweet spot of price and efficiency.
BLENDER VS SMOOTHIE MAKER
Blenders can tackle a wider range of kitchen tasks in a matter of seconds, from puréeing vegetables for soups and sauces to chopping nuts, crushing ice, grinding spices and more. Smoothie makers are designed to make one drink at a time; the jug also conveniently transforms into a cup. Most have a smaller capacity and are not powerful enough to take on tough ingredients.
TIPS AND FEATURES
• While plastic blender jugs are lighter, they can absorb odours and become scratched over time. Glass jugs are sturdier but can be very heavy when filled. High-quality plastics are extrastrong, and light.
• Make sure that all the parts are dishwasher safe.
• Some blenders come with blending cups and lids, which are useful when you’re on the go.
• Variable speeds give you more control, but we found two speeds sufficient. All blenders on test came with a pulse function.
• Removable inserts in the lid allow you to add ingredients as you go.
• Cable storage keeps the cable tidy when not in use.
• We found that more power doesn’t always equal better blending.
• Puréeing solid ingredients? Cut them into smaller pieces and feed small portions into the jug gradually, rather than adding a large quantity in one go.
• Always start by mixing solid ingredients with a little liquid, then gradually add more liquid through the opening of the lid.
• Allow hot liquids to cool before blending.
