Walking & wine

-

A smiling Tim Lundy greeted us at the manicured Creation wine estate for our hike. From the age of six, he’s literally followed in the footsteps of his famous hiker dad, Mike. Today he’s one of the best-known accredited guides in SA.

Tim and his wife, Gillian, have mapped out a few Glamtrail experiences, all within the picturesque Hemel-en-Aarde valley: there’s a harbour-to-harbour tour and an abalone tour; a picnic on a wine farm; and the one we went on: a walk through the vineyards and apple farms, with some wine tasting along the way.

The walk is two hours long and is rated 2B, which means it’s an easy walk with a bit of work at the end. Or, as Tim spins it: ‘You get to appreciate the experiences more because you have to work for them’. Okay, Tim.

Our first stop was Ataraxia wine estate, which is positioned in close proximity to the South Atlantic Ocean; this cooler climate is perfect for their award-winning Pinot Noir.

After that, we made our way back to Creation wine estate for their six-course Heritage Story wine pairing. Think malva pudding, bobotie and abalone with a twist, artfully paired with their award-winning wines. The experience was filled with breathtaking landscapes, some of the best wine this country has to offer and great South African food. If you want to make a weekend of it, you can – we stayed over in style at Selkirk house in Hermanus. It’s 20km from Creation, which makes it a perfect stopover. Plus, this luxury five-star accommodation has the best breakfast in town! Liza
