What I’m loving
Drs Özlem Türeci and Ugˇ ur S˛ ahin The married GermanTurkish physician couple who made the breakthrough in the Covid-19 vaccine – first, because they’re just so damn clever, and second, because, on the day they got married, they went to the lab first, then popped out to the registry office, then went straight back to the lab again. I imagine they didn’t even need to change out of their white lab coats. I love having people like that in charge.
Heavyweight podcast In Heavyweight, Jonathan Goldstein goes back to the moment in someone’s life that changed things for them forever; a moment that continues to weigh heavily on them – hence the name. These are ordinary people with broken relationships, regrets and what-ifs; things they’ve done or didn’t do that continue to have an impact on their lives. With a lovely blend of self-deprecation and insight, Jonathan helps them revisit those events, not always with ideal results but with constant humanity and humour.
Melton Wold
A few months ago, we went on a road trip in search of a bigger patch of sky, and found it at Melton Wold, a guest farm about 20km outside Victoria West. It’s totally old-school (in fact, it’s the oldest guest farm in SA), complete with push-button radios above the bed (that actually work!), creaky wooden floors and a vast boreholefilled pool. We were there during term time, so there were few other guests; the emptiness and long corridors were a little reminiscent of The Shining, but in a good way. I loved it.
NeoStrata Skin Active Matrix Support
This day cream is designed to target discolouration, and it has helped. It’s quite drying, and my skin is very dry anyway, so I used a rich moisturiser at night, and the combination worked well for me. It’s a very active formula, so you should steer clear if you have other issues like rosacea, but if discolouration is your problem, I highly recommend it.
