A live escape game at Just Breakout Escape Rooms is one in which you’re part of a team locked in a room. The goal is to come together to solve the puzzles and problems that will show you the way out.
A typical day for Savanah Xanthides starts by making sure the puzzles are set up, the locks are in the right place, and the CCTV cameras and two-way radios used for communication are operational.
The escape room experience begins the moment the clients arrive. This is also when Savanah gets a feel for the participants and evaluates them in terms of their experience, personality type and what level of interaction they might need. After she has explained the safety procedures and objectives of their chosen game, the players enter the room, the timer is set and the game starts.
Savanah monitors their progress using the CCTV cameras, paying attention to every detail: every move a player makes needs to be noted mentally. She also has to make sure everyone stays engaged by giving the team clues at the right time, triggering events just at the perfect moment and offering encouragement when needed. ‘Knowing the game you’re running inside out is absolutely crucial,’ she says. ‘You need to learn not only the puzzles but also how the team works, as well as the room’s quirks.’
Once the team completes the final puzzle or runs out of time, Savanah debriefs them and shares in the discussion of the experience. ‘This isn’t a job you learn and do the same way over and over. Each experience needs to be tailored to suit each individual team, because no two teams are ever the same,’ she says.
Her favourite part? Watching people solve the puzzles using creative thinking and logic.
