Popular food blogger Izelle Hoffman (34) has given a 21st-century twist to farmfresh cooking with nearly 80 recipes focused on
(Struik Lifestyle, R350). She started experimenting with recipes back in primary school and her inviting flavour combinations are fascinating.
I was brought up on a farm about 10km outside Bela-Bela, Limpopo. It meant I understood where food comes from, how plants have to be nurtured, that rain and harvesting each has to happen at the right time, and that products must be looked after all the way to going on sale.
For me, food has always been about the family getting together in the kitchen or around the braai to create amazing food. That has given me great food memories of comfort food, like goulash and potjiekos, as well as festive food, such as roast chicken and leg of lamb.
What I learnt about food from my parents was reinforced by other members of the family, such as my grandmother, who invited all of us grandchildren to her legendary baking days.
I was born with congenital hip dysplasia and have had 14 operations so far. It has been a major factor in making me rethink what
I put in my body, and it’s why I encourage others to focus on quality over quantity.

I live on a golf estate near Johannesburg, but I’m still a child of the Earth, spending as much time as I can in my own veggie garden.
