- – Roelof Bezuidenhout

A total of 167 887kg was on offer at the third sale of the mohair summer season, of which 99% was sold, according to Mohair SA.

The offering consisted of some excellent-quality mohair, and buying houses competed actively for all types, with Responsible Mohair Standard-certified mohair attracting the most competition.

The average market indicator increased 11% (an increase of 13% in US dollar terms) from the previous sale to close at R395,08/kg despite the rand trading stronger.

The highest price was paid for a bale of 24-micron super-style kids’ mohair that fetched R848/kg.

Compared with the previous sale, prices were: kids’ mohair up 15%, young goats’ mohair up 13%, fine adults’ mohair up 19%, and strong adults’ mohair up 16%.

“The sale turned all expectations and forecasts on their heads, with all price records being broken except for the summer kids’ and summer young goats’ records,” said Pierre van der Vyver, general manager of the House of Fibre.

“This was the biggest offering of mohair in five years, and it realised the biggest turnover ever. For the first time, the sale started at 8am and only finished at 10pm that night, a solid 14 hours of demand that never wavered.” The House of Fibre’s best price for summer kids’ mohair was the R844/kg paid for a bale offered by Roelfie van der Merwe of Aberdeen. A world-record price of R799/kg for young goats’ mohair (offered as winter kids’ mohair) was achieved by Andries Troskie of Somerset East, while Bertie Davenport of Pearson received R600/kg for a bale of adults’ mohair (offered as winter young goats’ mohair).

Another world record was notched up by Greg Harvey of Queenstown for a bale of adults’ mohair that fetched R550/kg. OVK Bins once again achieved the top bin price of the sale at R819,10 for a bale of BSFFK, according to Etienne Bezuidenhout, OVK’s mohair manager.

“Our best price went to Zeekoegat Trust of Aberdeen at R848/kg for a bale of summer kids’ hair. This bale of super-style hair tested at 24 microns with a clean yield of 92,4%. Suedwolle was the buyer,” he said.

The outlook for the coming season was that prices for seedy mohair would continue to be under pressure and that young goats’ mohair and all finer types would receive good attention. Generally, prices should trade sideways at current prices.
