Farmer's Weekly (South Africa)

If you were given R30 million to invest in agriculture, either in new or existing farming activities or in the agriculture value chain, how would you spend it?

I would address the challenges faced by small-scale/emerging producers regarding mentoring, packing, logistics and market access of their farming enterprises. Due to lack of critical mass, these enterprises face huge problems becoming economically sustainable and need all the help they can get.

What is the best advice you have ever been given?

Always be true to yourself, value all relationships and never underestimate yourself or your ability to bring about positive change in the lives of other people. This advice was given to me by a lifelong friend.

If you were given carte blanche to effect one major change in

South Africa tomorrow, how would you use this power?

Apart from addressing corruption, I would like to revamp and upgrade all national fresh produce markets to ensure continued price discovery and food security for Southern Africa.

What is the one thing that the COVID-19 lockdown has taught you not to take for granted?

Always expect the unexpected and be prepared for it. A virus does not discriminate, and anyone can get sick or die. Therefore treasure your health and always love the people close to you.

What is your favourite South African dish?

Most certainly a braai with friends and family. It should include steak, chops, braaibroodjies [braai sandwiches] and a potato salad. Both my parents loved a braai, and a braai with my family at least once a week is still a non-negotiable.
