Farmer's Weekly (South Africa)
Hillbilly Homes
Dear Jonno,
Could we please have a meeting to discuss a people’s market (farmers’ market) that I have in mind to establish on the N3 to Durban?
Attached is a Google Earth image of the site that I’m negotiating to use. Kind regards,
Imran
Dear Imran,
A people’s market, where our local country folk can exhibit their arts, crafts, curios, and home-made eats and drinks, will certainly be a welcome addition to the economy.
I’ve designed a layout that enables products to be exhibited on both sides of the circular walkways. Shown are 18 individual roofed compartments for leasing out to prospective sellers, and each compartment could possibly be rented by two sellers, depending on their products. Essential, too, are the toilet facilities.
I am familiar with the site you have in mind; it has a turn-off in both directions from the N3 and is a popular gateway to the Central Drakensberg.
The complex is constructed from wooden posts, spaced to individualise the compartments. Chicken wire (or something similar) is used to partition the compartments so that visitors can see the displayed products from all angles.
The entrance area near the two ponds can be converted into an open-air dining area to enable visitors to enjoy eats and drinks bought at the market. Kind regards,
Jonno
