France’s developmen­t agency will invest €68,5 million (about R1,19 billion) over the next five years to boost cotton production in Côte d’Ivoire, economy minister Bruno Le Maire said during a recent visit to the West African country.

The programme would target 120 000 cotton farmers in the northern region, boost revenue for the cotton sector, and benefit the local economy.

The country produced 490 000t of cotton in the 2019/20 season and the agricultur­e ministry forecast output of 500 000t for 2020/21.
