Optimism for tunnel farming, but load-shedding remains a risk
Mbali Nwoko, CEO, Green Terrace
HOW HAS YOUR BUSINESS FARED IN THE PAST YAER?
Our farm navigated a series of challenges on various fronts, which included weather conditions, financial performance, individual development and stakeholder relationships. The prevailing economic constraints forced businesses to streamline operations for survival. In spite of these challenges, we are thankful to be able to embark on a new season of farming.
HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT FUTURE PROSPECTS IN AGRICULTURE AND TUNNEL FARMING?
I maintain a cautious optimism about the future in the agricultural industry, particularly in tunnel vegetable farming. To ensure sustained growth, there is a need for increased investment in primary production, which will play a pivotal role in fortifying the industry’s foundation in providing food for the nation, jobs and contributing to the economy.
WHAT DO YOU THINK WILL BE THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES IN 2024?
The upcoming year brings concerns about persistent power cuts and escalating regulations on both the local and export front, as well as around food sacurity. These challenges necessitate strategic planning and adaptability.
One notable opportunity lies in active participation in policymaking decisions for farmers. As businesses throughout the value chain flourish, there is a subsequent push in demand for primary production. Challenges such as financial constraints, power cuts, climate issues and trade regulations can serve as catalysts for innovation, fostering the birth of new businesses that contribute to the alleviation of challenges faced by farmers and the sector as a whole.
WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR 2024?
Looking ahead this year, my plans include expanding our farming operations, launching a new venture in agritech, assuming more active roles in board positions, and contributing to agri-development initiatives.
These endeavours aim to not only enhance the scope of our operations but also to make a meaningful impact on the agricultural community.
