Italian farmers have joined in the continent-wide agriculture protest against the EU export policies by bringing over 2 000 trucks to block the capital city of Rome. According to Italian media, some farmers have been travelling for over a week making their way to Rome with their farming equipment as they believe it is the only way to get the government’s attention.

The farmers said they were losing money due to cheaper imports coming in from other countries from outside the EU and wanted this to be addressed. They were also protesting against the EU’s climate policies.

INDIA

Indian police used teargas to disperse thousands of farmers who marched in New Delhi after failed negotiations.

The farmers downed tools and headed to the capital city after talks with their unions and the government failed. Talks began earlier this month, with farmers demanding more support from the government in terms of guaranteed prices for produce and forgiveness of loans. Local media said police blocked entry points into New Delhi with barbed wire barricades and cement blocks as large gatherings in the capital had been banned.

CUBA

More than 30 chicken meat thieves have been charged in Havana after they took about 1 500 boxes of meat from a government facility.

The government said the chicken had been earmarked for its ‘ration book’ system to ensure food security for its citizens. It had video surveillance of the heist and among the arrested were shift managers at the facility, IT workers and security guards. If found guilty, the accused could face up to 20 years’ imprisonment. –
