HUNTING LEGISLATION

-

There are various laws and regulations that govern hunting in South Africa. If you are planning to run a venue that offers hunting as an activity, ensure that you are aware of the laws that apply. Bear in mind that these laws do not only include the act of hunting itself, but also regulations in terms of slaughter, transport and the sale of game. Here we provide a basic overview of relevant laws, but there may be others that also apply, and farmers are thus advised to consult experts in this regard.

National Environmental Management Biodiversity

Act (NEMBA), which regulates the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity in South Africa.

Firearms Control Act, which regulates the ownership, possession, and use of firearms in South Africa. Hunters and game farm owners must comply with licensing requirements and safety protocols for firearms used in hunting activities.

Hunting permits and quotas: Game farmers must obtain hunting permits and adhere to quotas set by provincial conservation authorities. Permits may specify the species, number, and time period for hunting activities. Also bear in mind that each province may have different permit and quota requirements in this regard.

CITES regulations: The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) regulates the international trade of protected species. Game farmers involved in hunting and trade activities must comply with CITES permits and regulations for species listed under the convention.

Ethical hunting guidelines: Game farmers should follow ethical hunting guidelines established by conservation organisations and hunting associations. These guidelines promote fair chase principles, humane hunting practices, and sustainable use of wildlife resources.

Conservation management plans: Game farmers may be required to develop and implement conservation management plans for their properties. These plans outline strategies for habitat management, wildlife conservation and sustainable hunting practices.
