Mohair up 6% on the back of good demand

- Roelof Bezuidenhout

The second mohair sale of the 2024 summer season saw 174 419kg on offer, of which 99% was sold.

The offering consisted of goodquality mohair, with individual clips achieving excellent results and buyers actively competing, according to Mohair South Africa.

A total of 84% of the offering was Responsible Mohair Standard certified. Increased demand saw the market gaining 6% compared with the previous sale to close at R395,61/kg.

The highest price of R850/kg was paid for a bale of 23-micron kid’s mohair. Compared with the previous sale, prices were up as follows: kid mohair 10%; young goat mohair 4%; fine adult mohair 8%; and strong adult mohair 5%. Pierre van der Vyver, general manager of The House of Fibre, said the sale went remarkably well.

“The differentiating factor was that the smaller buying houses also competed well; [however] only two processors were active at the first sale.”

While the catalogue on offer was substantial, the offering was of very high quality.

“It was one of the finest offerings micron-wise. To prove this point, the best price of the day went for a 20-micron bale with good style. Three years ago, this was unheard of, let alone that the bale was a C-length.”

This bale was produced by Sias Reynolds, of Kamferskraal Boerdery in Beaufort West. The bale had a clean yield of 86,5%, and achieved the highest price of R850/kg.

“This big clip was well prepared, leveraging the advanced technological support provided by The House of Fibre,” Van der Vyver said.

The OVK market indicator closed at R400,65/kg.

Their highest clip average was achieved by CJJ van Heerden of Murraysburg, with an average clip price of R506,23/kg.

The top bin price of R780/kg was achieved at the OVK public auction. The producers in this lot were HG Nash, Rynheath Trust, SCB Trust, WJ du Toit, WC Strydom, Lumachri Boerdery, and JA Gouws. The buyer was Stucken & Co.

OVK’s highest price of the day of R795,10/kg was produced by WC Strydom, of Willowmore, for a BSFFK lot of 22,9 microns. The buyer was Samil. –
