Mohair prices up at third sale of the season

- Roelof Bezuidenhout

The third mohair sale of the summer season saw 159 131kg on offer, of which 98% was sold. The large offering consisted of some good-quality mohair of which 83% was Responsible Mohair Standard-certified. The sale reflected the current demand for mohair as buying houses competed for all types on offer.

The average market indicator increased by 2% from the previous sale to close at R403,04/kg, according to Mohair SA. A highest price of R820/kg was paid for a 24-micron bale of good-style kid mohair. Compared with the previous sale, prices were as follows: kid mohair was up 2%; young goat mohair was up 2%; fine adult mohair was up 1%; and strong adult mohair was up 1%.

“The sale delivered satisfactory results, although we quote the market as unchanged. The small difference that occurred was in the seller’s favour,” said Pierre van der Vyver, general manager of The House of Fibre.

“We’re satisfied with this outcome, as 42% to 45% of the anticipated production for this season has now been sold. The current price levels are acceptable as too many dramatic increases in a row are not good for a longer-term sustainable market.”

The top clips excelled with the best average for a complete clip achieving R523,23/kg. The best price of R815,20/ kg for an individual bale went to Richard Herold of Graaff-Reinet for a B-length, good-style bale of kid mohair of 22,5 microns and a clean yield of 90,9%.

“More top clips are coming on the market now and we expect another full sale on 16 April,” Van der Vyver said. –
