A plan for business
What is President Jacob Zuma offering business in exchange for financial support for the ANC?
The party is bankrupt, so it can’t pay its way. All that can be on offer are shady tender deals that also have a way of blowing up without any of the parties being paid.
And as for the parastatals, they’re all in the red, having been milked by dishonest and incompetent managers and CEOs.
Business must play the president’s game, but should insist on certain conditions. Zuma must, with immediate effect: Admit to his involvement in Nkandla, or take responsibility for it, and pay back the money;
Attend all parliamentary sessions and face the music; and
Get shot of incompetent ministers and managers whose departments are crumbling.
If the president responds positively to these conditions, business will enjoy the benefits as a direct consequence.
And the country as a whole will be grateful. Cliff Buchler, George
