Unless there’s a flurry before next week’s deadline, Sars commissioner

will be disappointed by the poor response to the tax amnesty for undeclared foreign assets, which government hoped would rake in R40bn additional revenue. It seems only 10% of that could be realised, partly because those affected find the process too complex and risky. Perhaps more would have come forward — and helped plug an expected R50bn budget shortfall — if government had a cleaner image.
