“When one has been here for 34 years, one has to say ‘it’s time’,” declared statistici­an-general announcing he’d be leaving Stats SA in October after 17 years at the helm. “My contract is coming to an end, I’m not resigning.” The outspoken number-cruncher, known for his yellow suits, led Stats SA without much trouble. He once got inflation wrong; but more recently he spoke of the need to ensure the agency’s autonomy. He plans to spend time in Lesotho, where he studied, and to write his memoirs.
