Trump good for US despite his faults

- Dacre Haddon Port Elizabeth

Why is there often such outrage, condemnation and disdain if people express public support for US President Donald Trump?

Trump is certainly controversial and has all too often stuck his foot in it — and he has idiotic ideas, one of which is building a wall to halt Mexican immigration to the US. However, there appears to be a worrying, vindictive attitude to the man emanating from the Left, and he is not (for all his faults) getting the recognition he deserves for much of what he has achieved and will achieve in his presidency.

Furthermore — as per your article on the topic (Fox, August 16-22) — the DA appears embarrassed and, as usual, divided at the conduct of one of its own, Johannesburg mayor Herman Mashaba.

What a shame this is, coming from a party that purports to have liberal values, a tolerance of opposing views and respect for freedom of speech.

For all of Trump’s faults and his “shoot from the hip” antics, should he not be admired for the many positives that are ensuring a vibrant US economy?

I am no economist, but what is wrong with implementing trade tariffs if current business practices deny citizens employment, and consumers can obtain goods made in the US at cheaper prices? What is wrong with putting American interests first, and trying to increase the tax base and entice new investment?

Unemployment is at a record low in the US and the dollar is at its strongest levels in a long time.

We should respect Trump more because he tells it truthfully (though with too much abhorrence) and does not beat about the bush — even if we disagree with certain of his views.

Trump is his own man and not prone to apologetic hand-wringing and wanting to be “politically correct” for the sake of expediency and political point-scoring.

Is it wrong that Trump exited the world climate change “boys’ club”, as he believed he had more cost-effective solutions to this problem — which would have more benefit for the US?

The recent diplomatic efforts involving him and North Korea’s Kim Jong-un negotiating nuclear disarmament are to be admired for the sake of world safety.

Finally, Trump has been labelled a misogynist and a racist. Really? Was it not stated in some media, shortly after his election, that one of the first executive orders he signed was to do with the advancement of African-american women in job start-ups in the US?
