JOHANNESBURG RESTAURANT – PLAKA

Food & Home - - Foodbites - BY PATIENCE GUMBO-CHIMBETETE

Iam not a big fan of Greek food, but a visit to renowned Greek restaurant, Plaka, at Cresta Shopping Centre – with its revised menu and refreshed decor – left me asking for more. Upon arrival, we were taken in by the great vibe and liveliness of the place – I’m not sure what I was expecting, but it definitely was not this fun affair! The effervescent atmosphere drew me in and, as we found our table, a friendly waiter came to take our orders.

After reading through the menu and finding ourselves unsure of what to order, the restaurant manager suggested we look at the “family table” – a selection of popular hearty dishes designed for families and friends to share. The meals came with a village salad, generous portions of dolmades, beef kebabs and pork ribs. I found the pork ribs – which were coated in a sweet and spicy sauce with sesame seeds – a bit sweet, but my husband thoroughly enjoyed them and commented that they tasted like nothing he’s had before.

Since the menu still includes many traditional Greek favourites like calamari, pastitsio, kleftiko, whole grilled linefish, prawns and lamb chops, I also went for a nice serving of eight queen prawns, which were simply divine. And seeing that the restaurant will be open on Christmas Day, I might just go back for more of the new menu!
