Airport intersection calls for attention

- Myron Rabinowitz

Another serious accident took place on Friday morning 29 September at the infamous George Airport intersection.

Eye-witness Deidre Botha who was returning home had to swerve to avoid the accident that took place in front of her.

She was travelling from George to

Great Brak River and saw a black Honda approach the stop street from the airport in the direction of Blanco.

“I think the car stopped and then just drove across the busy R102 in front of an oncoming car travelling towards George from Great Brak River. I assume the driver never saw the oncoming vehicles."

Botha, who stays on a farm near the intersection, says she wishes the authorities would listen to the appeals of the residents and upgrade the intersection.

"I have seen and heard of too many accidents at this intersection. As a temporary measure I request the roads department erect those large 'high risk accident zone' warning signs with amber flashing lights on all four approaches to the intersection until something more concrete can be done."

Byron la Hoe, spokesperson for the provincial roads department, said, "Currently, and upgrade is not envisaged for the intersection, but the department is removing all illegal advertising and sign boards in the vicinity that have been erected outside the road reserve. It is possible that these may distract road users, and factors such as human error could also potentially contribute to the number of accidents at the intersection."

Bianca Carls, spokesperson for the Western Cape Health department, confirmed that the six patients admitted to George Hospital after being involved in the car accident have all been discharged from hospital.
