Good luck to George tourism
Anonymous, George:
I am involved in tourism, so I observe much related to what works and what doesn't. The unfortunate fact is that the only thing George offers tourists is the expensive airport and the highway past (and away from) George. Besides the golfing market [that our world famous golf estate itself scores on], George has nothing to offer inbound tourists that they haven't seen before.
Good ideas are shot down by a few people who don't know the first thing about tourism, and are busy conserving something that has never worked in the past.
Interference from unqualified 'politicians' is our biggest problem, resulting in budgets being spent on tourism offices being established in unsafe areas that offer absolutely nothing.
Learn from Cape Town and Knysna, and bring popular events to George, especially outdoor and sport related events that bring people with money to spend. People (controversial) based festivals have not always been shown to be popular, and have become unpopular with locals, but events for motorcyclists, cyclists, hikers, golfers, etc. have always brought people seeking accommodation, meals, entertainment and more to areas, but conservative George misses out. Sadly, establishing attractions are shot down, resulting in nothing being found in the area, so tourists go and spend their $,€,& £ elsewhere. For example, if people understood how much income could be generated by an environmentally friendly cable car to the best viewpoint in the Southern Cape, where people could even hike from one peak to the other and then have a few zip lines back down the mountain, not only will jobs be created, but it will generate massive income to George as people will actually stay here and spend here.
I wish you well Joan Shaw, and hope that you can be left to do something without political interference from incompetent people with ulterior motives.
