George Fire Department is gearing up for International Firefighters' Day with celebrations kicking off with a Grand Parade on Friday 4 May. Over 30 fire-fighting vehicles from fire departments across the Western and Southern Cape will take part in the parade, which starts at 15:00.

The public is encouraged to come out to watch this impressive parade and to wear red and blue in support and recognition of the sacrifices that our firefighters make to ensure that their communities and environment are kept safe. There will be no road closures during the parade, which will start at the R102 (Pacaltsdorp) traffic circle, move down York Street, stop briefly in front of the Civic Centre at 15:30 where the vehicle procession will be joined by a drilling platoon, move up to the York Street circle into Courtenay Street, and turn right into Mission Street. From there the parade will go into the Rosemoor, Conville and Pacaltsdorp areas. Traffic flow will be slightly delayed and the George Fire Department requests the public's patience during this time.

Hose rolling and potjiekos

On Saturday 5 May eight firefighting teams, including one ladies team, will showcase their skills with challenges such as the "Hose Roll", the "Fireman's Carry" and the "Tyre-flip".

The public is invited to attend the event at the Garden Route Mall from 10:00 to 16:00. Come and see our very own George Fire Department in action. Demonstrations will include an extrication from a vehicle accident. Fire-fighting vehicles will be on display and a potjiekos competition will be held with six teams taking part. The fire departments will donate the food they prepare to a worthy cause.
