Mosaic beautifies Thembalethu Day Care Clinic
A beautiful mosaic artwork was recently completed in the entrance area of the new Thembalethu Day Care Clinic.
The Wilderness mosaic artist Julian Phillips and his team were commissioned by BSMM Design and Good Hope Construction to do the artwork as a community upliftment project. They installed a 2m x 12m mosaic mural that reflects the community environment.
Mosaic is not necessarily restricted to the use of traditional marble or ceramic tiles, but can comprise a fusion of many different materials. Julian explained, "For this project we combined glass and ceramic and used metal cut-out figures raised against the background of mosaic tiles, creating a more modern approach in order to tie in with other modern elements in the architectural environment".
This ancient form of art expression dates back to the oldest civilisations, providing clues of how the culture was captured in those times, and mosaics that provide new evidence for historical records are still being found. "You could say that mosaic has been a reflection of society's history," says Phillips.

"For people who have been through trauma or stress, the process of mosaic helps to lift the spirit, calm the mind, and restore psychological balance and harmony. In this time of modern fastpaced living, with cellphones, internet, fast cars, travel and information being the norm, we are exposed to stressful conditions and monetary pressures.
Mosaic is an activity valued to bring back a sense of focus on the moment, which slows down the brain waves, inducing a form of relaxation and creativity.
“This brings about healing and is a perfect medium to benefit everyone in this day and
