Hallelujah!

At Denneoord church on 18 May

-

The popular local orchestra and choir, Carpe Musicam! will be presenting their 2018 Hallelujah! concert at the Dutch Reformed Church Denneoord at 19:00 on 18 May. This concert should not be missed, especially by lovers of choral music, as only three of the concert items are for orchestra alone.

The programme, which Carpe Musicam! describes as a "revisiting of the Easter to Pentecost story in music", combines old favourites such as Handel's Hallelujah Chorus and Mozart's Ave Verum Corpus, with more modern items.

Soloists

Known for his satin voice, tenor Hannes Wannenburg will lead the orchestra and choir in Stephen Foster's The Holy City, and local soprano Ninette Smit, a perennial favourite, will feature in the award-winning Pie Jesu from MASSive - a Mass in Rock by the British-born contemporary composer Paul Barker. The orchestra and choir will perform all four movements of this stunning work as well as a selection of other music by Barker, including his beautiful Domine Jesu Christe, which is based on the slow movement of Mozart's Concerto for Flute and Harp.

Choir

The orchestra and choir's musical standard has improved enough for them to perform an item by Ludwig von Beethoven for the first time in their nearly three years of existence. The Hallelujah! from Beethoven's oratorio Christ on the Mount of Olives, once heard, can never be forgotten.

Refreshments

Tea, coffee and light meals will be available at the venue for an hour before the show starts, and ensembles from George South Primary's music department will serenade pre-concert munchers.

Refreshments will also be on sale during interval.

Tickets are priced at R100 per adult (scholars enter free), available from the Denneoord Church's office in Charlotte Street, Denneoord, The Office at Pre-Cap Centre in Courtenay Street or at the door. For more details, call Elsabe on 073 857 2952.
