It is a thrill for the South Cape Children's Choir (SCCC) to be part of the 10th anniversary edition of the South African choir festival Ihlombe!, which this year encompasses 12 concerts, two world premieres and 20 ensembles in different places in South Africa.

This year's festival honours the 100th anniversary of the birth of Nobel Peace Prize-winning icon Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, and is known as the Mandela at 100: Voices of Hope, Freedom and Unity celebration. The performance of our local choir, together with the Atlanta Young Singers, takes place on Thursday 19 July at 19:30 St Mark's Cathedral in York St, George. In the rest of the country, choirs from Washington DC, Atlanta, Seattle,

Los Angeles, Baltimore and Zimbabwe will perform along with South African choirs.

History

Established in 2009 with a special focus on collaboration and service, Ihlombe! features a true diversity of international choirs performing for audiences in every venue imaginable, making for what the Cape Times calls "singing that nourishes the body and soul."

Over the past decade, Ihlombe! has featured nearly 90 choirs, from some 10 countries, throughout South Africa.

This year the festival takes place from 1 to 20 July at Soweto, Hillbrow, Port Elizabeth and Cape Town. The foreign choirs include five from the USA and two from Zimbabwe.
