Children’s art
exhibition at museum
Every year, Eden and Central Karoo Education District (Ecked) organise an art competition for learners at all schools from Riversdale to Plettenberg Bay, and inland as far as Calitzdorp. Over 1 000 of our local children are expected to take part this year.
The exhibition of the entries opened on Wednesday 27 June at the Sayers Hall Art Gallery in the George Museum and culminates in a gala evening on Friday 20 July. The gala evening is reserved for teachers, parents and winners, but anyone wishing to attend can send an e-mail to phillip.jaftha@westerncape.gov.za.
Maura St.John, chairperson of the South Cape Association of Visual Arts (Scava), said the benefits of an art education for children will be highlighted. "Some dedicated teachers and educationalists are, on a voluntary basis, putting a lot of effort into making art part of the everyday lives of pupils. Children are now working hard on their submissions and judging is taking place this week."
All the entries will be exhibited in the Sayers Hall, where they will remain until the gala evening.
The event is supported by Scava, who will award one or two prizes. Scava members are encouraged to attend the gala evening. Two prizes were also sponsored by the
Bella Smith foundation. This exhibition has grown into a very important cultural event on the museum's art calendar.
The Creative Curriculum Advisor of the Western Cape Department of Education, Phillip Jaftha, said that 16 of the best entries will be exhibited at the provincial art exhibition in Stellenbosch.
All Grade R to Grade 9 learners in all schools of the Western Cape Education Department were invited to participate in this exciting event.
The purpose of the art celebration is to promote learners' creativity and ability to interpret their perception of their world (their imaginative inner world as well as their physical and material world) into a visual artwork.
