Greenpop’s Festival of Action comes to Eden

-

Thousands of indigenous trees were planted, one environmental mural painted and 80 participants inspired in the inaugural week of Greenpop’s 7th Festival of Action, which started on 23 June. Greenpop, an award-winning social-environmental NPO, presents the annual three-week programme in the Eden district to help regenerate habitats and restore ecosystems, and to create mass environmental impact by planting indigenous trees, building beehives, holding eco-education workshops, and creating environmental art.

The first week

Almost 80 participants aged 13 to 19 flocked from across the country to Peace of Eden Eco Retreat near Rheenendal for an immersive, educational experience in getting back to their roots and taking environmental responsibility into their own hands.

The activities included the planting of more than 1 300 trees across various sites, urban greening, indigenous reforestation and workshops introducing the concepts of permaculture design, biomimicry, ecosocial enterprise, mycology cultivation and beekeeping with Hope for the Honeybees. Sixty new participants from various schools joined the team on site this week. The final week (8 to 15 July) will host a fully facilitated All Ages programme.

You can still take part

The final week (8 to 15 July) will host a fully facilitated All Ages programme and a closing musical evening showcasing a number of local greats on Saturday 14 July. There are still spaces available for the All Ages Week. Participants can look forward to a thriving, active seven days of indigenous reforestation, alien vegetation clearing, eco-bricking, mural painting as well as a series of ecoeducation workshops. Apply at www.festivalofaction.com.

People can also join one of the open days (info: http://bit.ly/EdenOpenDays) or a permaculture and biomimicry workshop on 12 July (info: http://bit.ly/EdenWorkshops).
