Man loses leg in R102 accident

Apedestria­n lost his leg after yet another accident on the notorious R102, the old airport road, Tuesday afternoon. The road was closed for several hours following the collision between a truck and a stationary bakkie at approximat­ely 16:30.

According to informatio­n the driver of the bakkie had stopped to pick up people when the truck hit the bakkie from behind. It is believed the pedestrian got caught in the middle while trying to get on the back of the bakkie.

The truck driver lost control of the vehicle and it overturned.

According to ER24 spokespers­on Russel Meiring, the pedestrian sustained serious leg injuries as his leg was already partially amputated when paramedics arrived on the scene. Emergency personnel had to use the jaws of life to rescue the truck driver from the wreckage.

The road remained closed for several hours while mopping-up operations were taking place.

The truck driver sustained critical injuries and was transporte­d to George Hospital by Eden911 paramedics.

ER24 paramedics transporte­d the other patient. By the time of going to print no new informatio­n regarding the patients’ well-being had been received.

The driver of the bakkie did not sustain any injuries.

It is believed the pedestrian got caught in the middle while trying to get on the back of the bakkie.
