Winter initiation season a success

- Zolani Sinxo

The winter initiation season in Thembalethu went of without a glitch. Only a few initiates underwent the Xhosa rite of passage to manhood which started at the beginning of June.

The chairperson of the George Initiation Forum, Mzwandile Gincana, confirmed that only 14 initiates from Thembalethu went to the bush this winter. He said no incident of concern was reported and everything was a success.

“We are happy to have successfully conducted another initiation season with no problems and we are looking forward to the December initiation season, which is usually the busiest. We are again pleading with members of the public to work with us to ensure that we make this December season a success too,” said Gincana.

The George Initiation Forum helps prevent botched circumcisions and locals from falling prey to bogus traditional surgeons and nurses. The forum provides a regulatory framework to ensure the competence, safety, and quality of traditional health care services.

The forum requires all local traditional surgeons, nurses and other role-players to be registered with the forum and function under its jurisdiction.

For any information about the forum or to find registered surgeons and nurses, contact Gincana on 071 773 6565 or
