Remember Arbor Week 1-7 September

- Pauline Lourens

Two indigenous trees were selected and named the 2018 Tree of the Year as part of the Arbor Week celebrations which, as always, will be held in the first week in September. Arbour Week celebrates the beauty and importance of indigenous trees.

Garden Route Botanical Garden (GRBG) manager Finn Rautenbach said, "South Africa has more than

2 000 indigenous trees and each year the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries selects two specific trees to be highlighted for the year; one common and one rare species. The trees chosen for 2018 are the Yellowwood species (Genus podocarpus) which are found from Mozambique in the north to the Western Cape forests in the south; and the Shepherd tree (Boscia albitrunca), which is found from Zambia in the north to the Northern Cape in the south".

Nursery opening times

The GRBG's Arbour Week Plant Sale takes place in the first week from 1 to 7 September at the garden's indigenous plant nursery. Take note that the garden's Spring Sale takes place in the first weekend of October. The nursery hours are Mondays to Thursdays from 08:00 to 17:00; Fridays from 08:00 to 14:30; and Saturdays from 09:00 to 14:30. The proceeds of the sale of plants are ploughed back into the GRBG's coffers and are used to cover operational expenditure.
