‘Wonderful world of orchids’ staged
It's orchid season again and a wonderful display of blooming orchids will be on show at the Presbyterian Church Hall in Caledon Street, George. Ensure that you don't miss this exotic expo - diarise the dates: Thursday to Saturday, 13 to 15 September.
Members of the Orchid Society of the Southern Cape will do nine individual displays using the theme 'Wonderful World of Orchids'. Landscape and other displays will be judged according to the interpretation of the theme and variety of orchids used, and the winner will receive a trophy.
Individual plants will also be judged by Hendrik van der Hoven, a Cape Town orchid judge, plus three local show judges. There will be a champion, a reserve champion and a class winner in each category.
This year there will be an accent on educating the public with regards to orchids. Organiser Else Hall said, "We will have 'easy to read' posters supplying information on all things to do with these exotic plants".
Admission is R10 for adults. Children under 12 years enter free. Raffle tickets will be sold at the door - the prize this year is a blooming standard size Cymbidium with at least two spikes. There will be a second and third prize.
Opening times are 09:00 to 17:00 on Thursday and Friday, and 09:00 to 14:00 on Saturday. This will allow working people to pop in after businesses close on Saturday.
Potting demonstrations will be held on Thursday 10:30 (Cymbidiums) and
15:00 (Cattleyas); Friday 10:30 (Cattleyas) and 15:00 (Phalaenopsis); and Saturday 10:30 (Cymbidiums) and 12:00 (Phalaenopsis). These demonstrations are very popular, so do come early to get a good seat. Potting mix and fertilisers will be sold at the show.
