Carpe Musicam!

transports audience with delight

- Pauline Lourens

A jovial atmosphere prevailed during the Transports of Delight concert held by Carpe Musicam! orchestra and choir held on Saturday at the Denneoord Dutch Reformed Church. Music lovers were greeted by the vocal and instrumental ensemble of George South Primary School in the foyer, whilst delicious eats were served by the church's ladies service group. The varied programme, with a transport theme, had people tapping their feet to Anchors aweigh; Funiculi funicula by Luigi Denza performed by choir and orchestra; Chattanooga choo choo and a Those magnificent men medley. Conductor Norman Carless loves to include two complicated compositions and on Saturday this comprised Bydlo - Ox Cart by

Mussorgsky; and Pacific 231 by Honegger. The orchestra took up the challenge willingly. A certificate was handed to George Herald journalist Pauline Lourens in appreciation for her support and attendance since 2015. Carless and choir leader Elsabé Barkhuizen have an inclusive approach to the orchestra and choir. Their welcoming stance means that the numbers vary all the time, depending on how busy the members' lives are. Their youngest orchestra member is the twelve-yearold violinist Annika Schröter. Elsabé is pleased with the current choir and orchestra membership of 100. Although the concert attracted over a 100 people on a frosty cold August evening, one would like to see more school children attend, as it is educational and truly inspirational to see these talented people in action.
