Schools MTB league going strong

-

Thrill and excitement filled the air as young budding mountain bikers hopped onto their saddles to pedal hundreds of kilometres in the #2, #3 and #4 events of the 2018 Spur Schools MTB League.

The league is in full swing and riders are racing in earnest as the October final in Magaliesburg edges closer. The latest events took place in the Worth West, Limpopo, Southern Cape, Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape. And according to race

directors in these respective provinces, riders covered a whopping combined 6 767,68km at the six events.

In the Southern Cape, riders' performance was excellent. Race director Juan Botes says 211 riders saddled up, pedalled a massive 2 117,78km and clocked in 719 laps around "a brilliant track".

Botes describes the race as tactfully and skilfully ridden, with many highs along the way.

The top performing primary schools are Blanco (1), George South (2) and Knysna (3). The top performing high schools are Outeniqua (1); Oakhill (2) and York (3).

"We are immensely proud to witness the appetite for the sport growing in our region and we look forward to developing it further," Botes says.

The league, currently in its tenth year, is South Africa's largest high school cycling programme and the main nursery for talent in the sport.
