Karate students snap up medals

Seventeen karate athletes from the

Okinawa Goju Ryu karate club recently took part in the Africa Goju Federation (AGF) tournament at the Coetzenbur­g Sport Centre in Stellenbos­ch.

The tournament served as a national event and trials for the South African Goju team to take part in the World Goju Federation Tournament in Malaysia next year.

In the tournament section, Tanisha McLellan and Rhuzaan Pretorius took gold in both kata and kumite.

Gold also went to Richardu Janse van Rensburg, Lianke Barkhuizen and Simoné Stander, while silver medals were taken by Melanie Mittendorf, Bosman Joubert, Minnaar van Rooyen, Nico Gertenbach and RC Coetzee.

Those that qualified for the RSA Goju Federation team are Minnaar van Rooyen, RC Coetzee, Jason van Tonder, Richardu Janse van Rensburg and Sieg Minnie.
