George APD a lighthouse in a stormy sea
The George Association for Persons with Disabilities (APD) is planning a bumper Christmas party at the end of November for the 70 children and adults that are members of the Optima facility in Olympic Drive, Pacaltsdorp.
Amonette Prinsloo, the childcare and educational social worker, said she is concerned that there are many more people in the community who need the professional services that the APD offers. "We don't seem to be making a dent in the waiting list. Our only saving grace is that the community comes forward when help is needed."
Generally the prerequisites for people with a disability is difficult to define in broad terms, as the severity of the disability and the resultant requirements vary greatly from one person to the next. The state's disability grant is a help, but for some it is a drop in the bucket as the need for different levels of therapy can be a financial burden.
"In spite of the various degrees of disability, we try to develop children fully by means of the necessary stimulation and support," said Prinsloo. Educational and social services are also being rendered to the families of APD members.
For Prinsloo, it is a highlight of her work to see the smile on the faces of the children and grownups when they go on outings. "That is when you know that the combined efforts of the APD's dedicated team is making a difference in someone's life and more importantly, giving dignity to a life."
The increase in the petrol price affects everyone, but when you collect 70 clients from home every morning, transport them in specially adapted vehicles to ensure their safety and comfort and return them home in the afternoon, it is concerning to see how fuel costs eat into the budget.
"We are thankful to the broader George community who always come to our aid when we are in a pickle. The Coded Motorcycle Club, SWD charter has once again jumped in to make the Christmas party a fun day that will be etched in the memories of young and old," said Prinsloo.
